Talk: WWI Football stories - Football's Role in Gallipoli & Ammunition Factories

11 Oct 2025
1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

About Event:

As we remember the 110th anniversary of the Gallipoli operation, this talk studies the impact of football as a vehicle for morale/fitness/esprit de corps during this fateful campaign of 1915. It will feature several fascinating characters, on both sides of the wire, who served at Gallipoli including a number who never came home.

Clive Harris is currently researching a PhD on football's impact on the British Army during the Great War and has a deep personal connection to the Gallipoli Campaign in particular.

Steve Bolton will explore the lesser told stories of the women's football teams during World War One and the popular following that they gained. A special pop up exhibition about women's football will be displayed for the day.

Steve Bolton is a Women's Football Historian with particular expertise in WW1 and post WW1 Women's Football History. His grandmother was footballer in WW1.

Light refreshments will be served at this event.

There is wheelchair access and an accessible toilet on site.
